How we sleep train our 4 month old baby in less than a week!

Sleep Training

First of all, congratulations on making it to 4 months as new parents! Personally, we found the first 3 months the toughest, especially the constant waking of our baby son every 2 hours (and in some cases every 45 mins!).

So, you have googled all day and in the middle of the night on how to make baby sleep all night. How to sleep train my baby, basics of sleep training, what is sleep training like? There are a million questions on Google.

Well, you have landed in the right place. We have been there and done that with a million other things we have tried, but this ONE method is how we got our baby to sleep instantly right through the night. After 3 nights of sleep training we had our 4 month old baby sleeping 6 to 8 hours through the night! So it's not hard to sleep train ANY baby. Babies are like sponges, they soak knowledge and skills so quickly that they know what is being taught to them. Hence, the earlier you sleep train them the better for their baby brain development.

So, how did we do it? Well first off just like any skill, newborn babies need to learn how to sleep through the night.

Grab a quick coffee and continue reading below on the method we used to sleep train our 4 month old baby. Keep in mind this sleep training method should not be used for a 3 month old baby or earlier, as your newborn baby is still exploring and adjusting the new world that they have just entered. Also, your baby is still needing feeds through the night to ensure they stay full and obtain all the nutrients when their tiny bodies go through multiple growth spurts.

How to instantly sleep train your 4 month old baby

I don't know about you, but I cried before we slept train our baby because of how exhausting raising a newborn can be. I also cried after training our baby to sleep, because of how much I missed my sleep!

We used the Baby Sleep Miracle guide which is created by Mary-Ann Schuler. She is a child psychologist and has two kids on her own. With 20 years of experience under her belt, she has been advising new parents how the benefits of sleep training is massive for your own sanity and ultimately your baby.

The guide is a digital resource that you can download containing lots of useful tips and guidelines on how to improve your baby's sleep routine. One very important routine that we found was ensuring our baby had enough naps during the day. You may ask, how many naps should a baby have? Our baby had three naps during the day:

  1. 9.00am - minimum 30 mins nap (sometimes 45 mins)
  2. 1.00pm - minimum 30 mins nap (sometimes 60-75 mins)
  3. 4.30pm - minimum 20 mins nap (sometimes 30 mins)

Every baby is different, so you and your partner need to figure out a routine for your baby. For example, your baby may need a white noise machine to nap during the day, but not at night. They might need a night light on during his night sleeps. These are some of the questions that the guide will help you consider. Personally, we used a white noise machine before 3 months and from 4 months old we didn't use one nor did we use a night light.

When you complete reading her book and the other resources provided, it will change the views of motherhood because not everyone is the same. No one here is to judge you as a parent because only you know what works well for your baby. But one thing is for sure after completing this, you will feel less stressed about the lack of sleep your baby (and you!) is getting i.e. no more having your baby waking up every two hours or every 45 minutes! Who doesn't want their baby to sleep instantly.

This is the best sleep training method for parents who are:

  • Action oriented and are committed in following the guide to the T!
  • Caring, loving with a huge heart, and at least one of you is cool headed (got to have one good cop and one bad cop in parenting :))
  • Putting in the effort and understand there is only 1 week of time invested
  • Sick and tired of constantly battling with your husband to alternate turns waking up 1.30am, 2.30am, 3.00am, and 4.00am!

Mary-Ann explains and presents the sleep training methods in a very easy and understandable manner. It's broken down into chapters with the following topics covered:

  1. 1
Why sleep is important for baby
  2. 2
Benefits of sleep training your baby
  3. 3
The pitfalls of baby sleep deprivation and how it will impact your child's growth
  4. 4
How to prepare your baby or child for sleep training
  5. 5
The pitfalls of baby sleep deprivation and how it will impact your child's growth
  6. 6
Sleep guidelines and sleep training methods for your newborn baby
  7. 7
    Importance of baby naps
  8. 8
Importance of baby and child routines
  9. 9
    Importance of consistently feeding patterns
  10. 10
What is the perfect sleep environment for your baby
  11. 11
The signs that your baby is over tired
  12. 12
How to resolve newborn baby separation anxiety

When going through the guide, one myth that really struck me was that babies need to be awake longer during the day so they get tired for the night and therefore will sleep longer. I don't know about you, but my parents have told me multiple times to let him stay up for another hour so he can sleep longer at night. THIS IS WRONG! The science speaks for itself. Babies need the correct amount of sleep for brain development.

If your baby isn't getting between 16-20 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period then this will help you and baby out. Keep in mind those hours will come down as they get older. For example, at 6 months it is normal for babies to sleep 15+ hours and at 9 months 14+ hours a day.

The Baby Sleep Miracle guide will help you change your thinking of sleep training your baby and also a wide range of other misconceptions that is backed by scientific research without all the technical/medical bulls**t words. The science studies used were researched in Stanford and Harvard University.

As you progress through the guide, she will reveal proven and achievable sleep training methods which works for all ages from birth up till the age for 5. She has tailored each age with her own sleep approach.

Another thing that stood out for us when we were sleep training our son was that we were definitely overstimulating him and we weren't aware of overtired signs. For example, he was becoming more fussy between 7.00 - 7.30pm and constantly rubbing his eyes. As a result, we created our son's sleep routine as follows:

sleep train cues

Bedtime cues

Our baby's sleep routine

  1. Dinner at 5.00pm
  2. Bath at 5.45pm
  3. Bedtime milk at 6.00pm
  4. Read him a book at 6.20pm
  5. Bed at 6.30pm

He will toss and turn until 6.35pm but then sleep right through the night and wake up at 7.00am. So without these tips and understanding baby cues, my husband and I would be going through the crazy wake up times until the ages of 12 months if we were lucky! One of our key takeaways is to ensure baby has a routine, because once baby figures that its read a book time. He'll know it's sleep time!

Does Baby Sleep Miracle work and is worth buying? Is it a Scam?

Personally going through it and tried many other sleep training programs or methods, I'm not going to lie. At first I was thinking it's just another product. However, my husband and I found it very intuitive and informative that it took us such a short amount of time to train our 4 month baby to sleep through the night. Not only that, there is a great community online i.e. Facebook group for extra support.

We've personally recommended this to our family and friends and 18,000 parents from around the globe have used her methods. It will only work if you put the effort in and follow the guide. I mean, it's nothing when you think back to the 9 month pregnancy or even child birth!

You want your baby to sleep through the night, as much as you want him to nap during the day. So, just that alone should be worth buying it!
